Do you want to start sewing but don't know which machine to buy?
It's one of the questions I get asked most often, and I completely understand the confusion: there are so many options, prices vary wildly, and it's not always clear what someone starting from scratch really needs.
Today, I'm introducing three machines I've personally selected for their excellent value for money and their features that make them suitable for beginners.
They're not the absolute cheapest, nor the most technologically advanced; they are the ones that, in my opinion, give you a solid foundation without making you spend more than necessary.
1. Bernette B33: robust and compact without frills

The Bernette B33 is a machine that doesn't make grand promises, but it keeps them all. It's compact, robust, and precise: three features that, for a beginner, are worth more than any extra function.
It has an oscillating hook, which is a reliable and easy-to-manage system, and a free arm: that part of the sewing bed that detaches to allow you to sew in the round for sleeves, cuffs, and narrow hems. It's a function that seems trivial until you need it, and then you can't do without it.
If you want a durable machine that won't let you down and will teach you to sew without distracting you with a thousand options, the B3 is a solid starting point.
2. Janome 1028: from light to heavy, a little workhorse

The Janome 1028 is aesthetically pleasing, and I say this because it's not a trivial detail: if you like how the machine looks, you'll be more inclined to use it. But beyond its appearance, it's a machine that has everything you need without being excessive.
What I like most about the 1028 is its feed system. It transitions from light to heavy fabrics with surprising ease for its price range, which is why I call it "the little workhorse." It doesn't jam, doesn't struggle, it just goes. For those who want to sew on different materials without changing machines, it's a smart choice.
3. Necchi electronic: for those who want to start with a little extra

With the Necchi C700, we enter the world of electronics, but in an accessible version – affordable electronics, as I call it – which nonetheless opens up a different world compared to mechanical machines.
The first thing you notice is the number of available stitches: decorative, utilitarian, combined. Perfect for those who don't want to limit themselves to straight stitching and already want to explore something more creative.
But the feature that convinced me to include it in this list is the on-board speed control. You have a button to set the maximum speed even before pressing the pedal.
For beginners, this provides enormous security: you don't risk zooming off when you're still figuring out how to hold the fabric. You can go slow, control it, get comfortable, and as you improve, you increase the speed.
There's also a start/stop function, which allows you to sew without using the pedal: useful if you're still learning and prefer to focus only on your hands.
Which one to choose?
It depends on what you want to do and how much you want to spend.
If you're looking for simplicity and robustness, the Bernette B33 is your machine. If you want versatility with fabrics, go for the Janome 1028. If you already know you want something more advanced or if speed intimidates you and you want to control it from the start, the Necchi electronic is the answer.
